Begonnen hat die berufliche Laufbahn des urushi-Meisters jedoch zun\u00e4chst in eine anderen anspruchsvollen handwerklichen Metier, der Kunsttischlerei. In diesem Bereich war er 10 Jahre selbstst\u00e4ndig, als er sich entschied, Japanlack in Barcelona zu studieren. An der Escola Massana sowie der Escola Llotja legte er den Grundstein f\u00fcr seine heutige Profession. Von 1998 bis 2004 erlernte und perfektionierte Manfred Schmid die urushi-Lackkunst in seinem Atelier in Barcelona. Seit 2004 lebt und arbeitet er wieder in seiner Geburtsstadt Bremen. Von hier aus hat er seine Arbeit weiter vervollkommnet, und an nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen in den USA, Japan, Spanien und Deutschland
